PAP Mid-Year Conference 2012
26-27 October 2012
De La Salle University-Taft, Manila

“Legacy Lectures: Engaging our Philosophical Pioneers”

In anticipation of its 40th year anniversary, the Philosophical Association of the Philippines (PAP) wishes to announce its Mid-Year Conference, entitled “Legacy Lectures: Engaging our Philosophical Pioneers,” to be held at the De La Salle University-Taft, Manila, on 26-27 October 2012.

This conference pays tribute to our philosophical mentors who have devoted their lives for the development of philosophy in the Philippines, both as an academic discipline and as a way of life. These scholars have left their indelible mark on the younger generation of Filipino philosophers. We, therefore, wish to express our profoundest gratitude by engaging our philosophical pioneers, as we recognize and honor their important contributions. We owe our understanding of different philosophical traditions to our esteemed philosophical pioneers, and through this conference we intend to engage them by listening to them speak about their specific legacies, and by responding to them in the form of tribute pieces. In lieu of our usual parallel sessions, the Mid-Year Conference will be structured around interviews, lectures, and tribute pieces. A senior scholar will be featured in a panel, wherein he/she can either be interviewed or else deliver a talk; afterwards one or two mentees will engage the senior scholar.

We wish to pay tribute to the following philosophical pioneers:

Dr. Romualdo Abulad, SVD
Dr. Alfredo Co
Dr. Manuel Dy, Jr.
Dr. Leovino Garcia
Dr. Florentino Hornedo
Fr. Roque Ferriols, SJ
Dr. Julius Mendoza
Fr. Leonardo Mercado, SVD
Dr. Zosimo Lee
Dr. Emerita Quito
Dr. Ramon Reyes
Dr. Florentino Timbreza
Prof. Amable Tuibeo

We are inviting academics, graduate students, and independent scholars who have been students or who were influenced by the above pioneers to send a 200-word abstract for a tribute paper that will deal with the important contributions of the chosen pioneer to philosophy in the country. So as to avoid a merely romanticized tribute, please consider the following in your tribute piece:

Your tribute should deal with factual information on the contribution of the senior scholar in philosophy.
You may write a personal tribute, highlighting the senior scholar's direct influence on you; or you may deal with the influence of the senior scholar on other scholars.
The tribute paper may deal with the academic legacy of the senior scholar in his/her home institution--highlighting his/her research and publications, pedagogy, years of service, and innovative contributions that changed the face of philosophy in the institution.
Your tribute may focus on the national, regional, or international (or all) academic reputation of the senior scholar, emphasing the scholar's sterling contribution in philosophical research and publication.

Please note that, due to the peculiar structure of this year's Mid-Year Conference, the slots for paper presentations are limited, as we will only accept two tribute papers for each celebrated philosophical pioneer. Please send your abstract to philoassocphil73@gmail.com by 15 August 2012. The abstract should be in a Word or RTF file and prepared for blind review, i.e. the name of the author must not appear in the file. Please attach the file to your email. The following author's details should be indicated in the body of your email: Name and designation of the author, institutional affiliation and position, and title of the abstract.

The fee for this two-day conference will be Php 3,000 only. It will cover meals and snacks (lunch+morning and afternoon snacks), kits, CDs, a t-shirt commemorating the 40th year of PAP, and a copy of the maiden issue of SURI: The Scholarly Journal of the Philosophical Association of the Philippines, which will be launched during the conference.

For further details, please do not hesitate to contact me through the following email address, mcalano@ateneo.edu. Please take note of the following important dates:

15 August 2012 - Deadline of submission of paper abstracts
1 September - Notification for accepted papers
