“The Role of Philosophy in the K-12: Pedagogy and Content”

This conference is an appendage of the national conference held last April 1-4, 2014 at San Pablo Seminary in Baguio which discussed the structural and curriculum changes of the K to 12 to the discipline and teaching of philosophy in the basic and higher education.  In that conference, we discussed world trends in education, teaching philosophy to children, the state of philosophy in the seminary, multi-disciplinal approaches, instruments for measuring thinking, etc. We also had a workshop on the making of an outcomes-based syllabus.

The K-12 adjustments introduce a climate of chaos, ambiguity, and insecurity to all Filipino teachers but we philosophy professors view this impasse as midwifing a new vision for philosophy. We teach that philosophy is not really a discipline but an approach to reality and that teaching philosophy is not a job but a vocation. We commit to stay with the difficult process of laboring to find new ways of teaching philosophy that would form minds that trust and seek truth in the age of transnationalism, multi-cultural environments with real and virtual scapes, with recurring problems of injustice, corruption, and armed conflict.

In the CHED Memorandum Order No. 20, it is demanded that the teaching of philosophy should take the approach of general education. This implies that disciplines which we consider as leaning towards philosophy (such as the new integrated program for values formation from Kindergarten to Grade 10 “Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao”, the elective for Grade 11 students “Introduction to World Religions and Beliefs”, the course “Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person”, the tertiary GE courses “Understanding the Self” and “Ethics”) cannot anymore assume a disciplinal perspective but a cross-disciplinal one. This also implies that these courses need not be taught exclusively by professors with degrees in philosophy.

The said CHED memo cites Carol Schneider, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities: “…it is no longer a ‘multiple-choice’ world; instead, ‘big-picture thinking’ is in demand amid the complexity of life and massive explosion of knowledge across all fields. The globalized, technology-driven world order, with effects both good and ill, has also spawned different types of realities and problems that individuals and societies are expected to deal with in different facets of life. Issues of health, climate change, crime, and socio-economic disparity are no longer confined to national borders, making a board understanding of the world imperative. At the same time, to make sense of the world, perspectives must be grounded in home realities and securely anchored on a sense of personal and national identity and self-understanding.” (In Defense of a Liberal Education, Forbes, 10 August 2009).

We would therefore like the discourse for the mid-year to be based on, but not limited to, the following thematic streams:

	* Understanding the Self
	* Readings in Philippine History
	* The Contemporary World
	* Mathematics in the Modern World
	* Purposive Communication
	* Art Appreciation
	* Science, Technology and Society
	* Ethics
	* Pedagogical Styles
	* Philosophy for Children
	* Critique of the K-12 system

Potential contributors must send a 300-word abstract with an outline of their paper presentation. All biographic information should be in a separate file to be sent with the abstract and outline. The document must be in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format.

For submissions and inquiries, please email philoassocphil73 at gmail.com. The deadline of submission is 5 September 2014. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 19 September 2014.

The fee for this two-day conference is Php2,500 which covers meals, and includes the conference kit, certificate of participation, and PAP shirt.

We earnestly invite all philosophers, in all disciplines, across levels of education, to the agora and discuss this grave matter of how to educate the heart.
